Thomas Danthony - Brutalism
The Brutalism project is a collaboration with Black Dragon press about Brutalism architecture in London. He turns photographs that he has taken in to simplified images in Photoshop and then in turns creates screen prints of his creations. In this assignment we were required to use photoshop to do one of my brutalist like Danthonys work (shown on right), my work is shown below. |
German street artist EVOL transforms banal urban surfaces into miniature lifelike buildings. He is like an urban planner, but unlike the others, he creates a city within the city.
The artist uses complicated stencils and photographs to quickly transform powerboxes, and other worn urban surfaces into miniature apartment buildings or other structures. By drawing tiny balconies and satellite dishes onto the side of an electrical box, he is able to turn it into a realistic tiny skyscraper. |
'In his series complex series Peter Hickley creates a series of hand printed cyanotypes on watercolour paper and then hand stitched thread that represent the different muscle structures of the body'. Shown on the right is an example of his art work. As you can see he taken a picture of someones neck ad stitched parts to make it look like arteries in the body.
We then attempted to do our own versions of his art work so i photographed someone in class and then also photographed a skeletons body parts. I chose to do the face, as shown below. |
Guy Tal pictures his home town of the high deserts of the Colorado Plateau. He is inspired by the wild and uses his art work to express his thoughts. In a lot of his artwork he does close ups of leaves in contrast with a set coloured background. He incorporates a lot of colour in his work. Guy Tal says "I do not consider myself a photographer who creates art, but rather an artist working in the medium of photography".On the left are some examples of Guy Tals work.

The photo on the right is a picture i took to go along with the theme of nature taking back land. As you can see it is a weed growing up the side of a car tyre. I used photoshop to turn the photo into black and white. I got the idea of nature reclaiming its land and also the colour choice of black and white from the photographer Catherine Christofis.

Todd mclellan is a photographer who takes apart everyday objects and photographs them. In some of his artwork he photographs the object before he takes them apart and then shows the after product once He's dismantled them. His artwork incorporates different colours, as shown in the images on the right. You have the reds in contrast with the yellows and the other pieces and the stark background. His artwork has a contemporary look which makes it stand out.

These images were taken at an old MG garage. As you can see the cars have started to rust and decay and also in the second picture you can see nature is starting to grow out of the car boot reclaiming man made things (the car). Both rusting/ decaying and nature taking over tie in together as they are both the gradual process of something ageing and as a result these things are what happen.

In a lot of Aaron Siskind's work he follows the idea of dereliction and the decay. However all of his art work is in black and white to make it have a darker effect to the image, so i took inspiration from his art work and put some of my work into black and white.
Below are some examples of my pictures that i've put in black and white: |
For my final compositions i got inspiration from the photographer Tim Suess. He took pictures of similar structures and displayed them on a black background, as shown on the left is an example of his artwork. He puts images that he has taken from a particular place and puts them together to contras the depths of each picture. This also shows the different colours in each picture in contrast with each other.
His intentions when creating his artwork was to put pictures he took from the road trips he went on together to create a new image as a whole. i took close up images of things like walls and also pictures further away and cropped out the areas i wanted. |
As you can see from the pictures above i have focused all on the colour of the bench in the second picture where the paint has been wearing away over time and has been painted in many different colours and then i have zoomed out and captured the bench as a whole, showing its settings. These images link to my main theme of decay and the gradual wearing away of things over time as the benches paint is peeling away as the sea air decays the paint down.

As you can see in the images above, in the first picture i have focused on the carrossel, so you are able to see the colours in it and you can see the yellow and gold in contrast with the horses. Then in the second picture i have focused on the sea outside the window which u can slightly see, which makes the image look dark and you can just see the outline of the carrossel. This links to my theme as the casrrossel has been abandoned and is no longer used.
